Lesion Thickness

Lesion thickness is the measured depth of a skin lesion, especially a melanoma, from its surface to the deepest point of tumor invasion, and it helps estimate disease severity. In pathology, clinicians determine this value from an excised specimen, commonly using the Breslow method, which records invasion in millimeters under microscopic examination. Greater thickness generally indicates a higher risk of regional or distant spread and contributes to melanoma staging alongside findings such as ulceration. This measurement supports prognosis, guides decisions about further surgery and lymph node evaluation, and provides a standardized outcome for clinical research and treatment planning.

We developed a method to successfully remove, process, section, and stain, for histopathological evaluation, mammary tissue that had originally been fixed on slides as whole mounts. This method may promote the collection and evaluation of mammary gland whole mounts in reproductive and developmental test guideline studies.

Here, we present an integrated protocol for generating controlled osteochondral lesions in sheep knees to establish an experimental model suitable for bone and cartilage tissue regeneration studies. The protocol outlines a method for inducing a full-thickness osteochondral defect in the femoral condyle, utilizing techniques that minimize animal welfare impacts and variability in results.
