Motor Disability

Motor disability is a limitation in voluntary movement, coordination, strength, or physical function that can result from conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, muscles, bones, or joints. It develops when signals traveling through motor pathways are disrupted, or when muscles and skeletal structures cannot respond effectively to those signals, leading to changes in mobility, posture, balance, or daily activities. In medicine, clinicians assess motor disability through medical history, neurological examination, strength and gait testing, and functional evaluation. Findings guide rehabilitation, physical and occupational therapy, assistive technologies, and treatment of underlying conditions, supporting independence and improving quality of life.

Objective and easy measurement of sensory processing is extremely difficult in nonverbal or vulnerable pediatric patients. We developed a new methodology to quantitatively assess infants and children's cortical processing of light touch, speech sounds, and the multisensory processing of the 2 stimuli, without requiring active subject participation or causing discomfort in vulnerable patients.
