Peel Away Sheath

A peel-away sheath is a temporary, splitable introducer used to guide a catheter or other device into the body while minimizing disruption to the access site. After the device reaches the intended position, the sheath is withdrawn and separated lengthwise by pulling its handles or wings, allowing removal without displacing the catheter. This technique supports percutaneous vascular access and placement of central venous, dialysis, and other specialized catheters, improving procedural control and reducing the need for a larger continuous opening. Understanding how the sheath is positioned, stabilized, and peeled away is important for safe catheter insertion in clinical medicine.

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) has been shown to be useful in identifying patients with increased intracranial pressure (ICP). However, the non-standardized technique for this POCUS has hampered its use. We present a standardized image acquisition protocol for use in the acute care setting.

Characterizing Stomatal and Epidermal Traits Using Peels, Clearing, and AI-Based Image Analysis

2026

This protocol presents a comparative method to assess stomatal and epidermal traits in two distinct species using epidermal peels, clearing techniques, and AI-assisted image analysis. The goal is to enable high-throughput, reproducible quantification of cellular structures underlying stomatal function for agricultural applications and broad plant research.

Two Peeling Methods for the Isolation of Photoreceptor Cell Compartments in the Mouse Retina for Protein Analysis

This protocol presents two techniques to isolate the subcellular compartments of murine rod photoreceptors for protein analysis. The first method utilizes live retinae and cellulose filter paper to separate rod outer segments, while the second employs lyophilized retinae and adhesive tape to peel away rod inner and outer segment layers.

Detached Maize Sheaths for Live-Cell Imaging of Infection by Fungal Foliar Maize Pathogens

This manuscript details an optimized inoculation protocol that uses detached maize leaf sheaths for reproducible cytological, physiological, and molecular studies of maize interactions with fungal plant pathogens. The leaf sheaths facilitate real-time observation of cellular interactions between the living plant and fungus in unfixed tissues.
