Rabbit Stroke Model

The rabbit stroke model is an in vivo experimental system used to study how cerebrovascular injury affects the brain and to evaluate potential treatments for stroke. Researchers produce focal cerebral ischemia, typically by reducing or blocking arterial blood flow, which causes oxygen and glucose depletion, energy failure, neuronal injury, infarction, and subsequent inflammatory responses. This model supports investigation of stroke pathophysiology, assessment of neuroprotective drugs and reperfusion strategies, and evaluation of outcomes through behavioral, histological, and imaging measures. Its findings can help refine therapeutic approaches and inform the development of interventions before clinical testing.

Anesthesia and Monitoring in a Rabbit Model

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Anesthesia is an essential component of rabbit surgical and experimental procedures because it prevents pain, reduces stress responses, and helps immobilize the animal during handling and manipulation when general anesthesia is...

Various murine models of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) are widely used in experimental brain research. Here, we demonstrate the model of transcranial permanent distal MCAO which produces consistent cortical infarction of a size corresponding to damage imposed by the majority of human ischemic strokes.

Continuous arterial blood pressure recording allows the investigation of impacts of various hemodynamic parameters. This report demonstrates the application of continuous arterial blood pressure monitoring in a large animal model of ischemic stroke for determination of stroke pathophysiology, impact of different hemodynamic factors, and the assessment of novel treatment approaches.

The Stroke Preclinical Assessment Network Multi-Laboratory Model of Thromboembolic Stroke with Thrombolysis: TE-MCAo

2025

To simulate thromboembolic stroke, emboli prepared from heterologous rat blood were injected into the middle cerebral artery, followed by administration of systemic thrombolysis for recanalization. This version of the model is optimized for use in a multi-laboratory network and supports testing multiple candidate therapeutics.
