Bat Activity

Bat activity is the pattern of movement, feeding, communication, and roosting that characterizes how bats interact with their environment. It is governed by circadian rhythms and influenced by light, temperature, prey availability, and season, while echolocation helps many bats navigate and locate food in darkness. In medicine and public health, monitoring bat activity can help assess opportunities for human or animal contact and inform surveillance of bat-associated infectious diseases. Activity data also support ecological studies of disease transmission, guide risk-reduction strategies, and improve understanding of how environmental change may alter interactions between bats, pathogens, and host populations.

Mammalian integument contains solvent-extractable lipids that can provide chemical compositions characteristic of individual species. This paper presents a routine method for separating broad lipid classes isolated from integumentary tissues using thin layer chromatography and determining the triacylglyceride profile by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry.
