Rat Retina

The rat retina is a layered, light-sensitive neural tissue that converts visual information into signals for the brain, making it a valuable model in biomedical research. Photoreceptors, including rods and cones, capture light and initiate phototransduction, while bipolar, horizontal, amacrine, and ganglion cells process and transmit the resulting signals through the optic nerve. Rat retinal studies support investigation of retinal degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, vascular injury, and neuroprotective or gene-based therapies. Histology, immunolabeling, electroretinography, and in vivo imaging can reveal cellular changes and functional outcomes, helping researchers evaluate disease mechanisms and potential treatments relevant to human vision.

Split Retina as an Improved Flatmount Preparation for Studying Inner Nuclear Layer Neurons in Vertebrate Retina

2024

This work presents an alternative flatmount retina preparation in which the removal of photoreceptor cell bodies enables faster antibody diffusion and improved patch pipette access to inner retinal neurons for immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and electrophysiology experiments.
