Surgical Knots

Surgical knots are tied configurations of suture material used to secure tissue, close wounds, ligate vessels, and stabilize surgical repairs. They work by creating friction and mechanical interlocking between strands, allowing a knot to maintain tension under forces such as tissue movement, fluid exposure, and handling. Knot performance depends on the suture material, number and arrangement of throws, and the balance between secure fixation and excessive tissue compression. Learning surgical knots helps clinicians select and place reliable closures while reducing risks such as slippage, tissue damage, infection, and impaired healing across diverse medical procedures.

Here, we introduce a novel approach-Laparoscopic Extracorporeal Knot-Tying for Uterine Vessel Occlusion during Hysterectomy with Cervical Cerclage in Large Uteri. A laparoscopic extracorporeal knot-pusher is used to perform cervical cerclage, achieving complete occlusion of uterine arteries. Thereafter, the corpus uteri are excised to enhance visibility and facilitate the operative field.
