Brain Regions

Brain regions are anatomically distinct areas of the brain that contribute to perception, movement, cognition, emotion, and essential body functions. Neurons within regions such as the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, amygdala, cerebellum, and brainstem communicate through electrical impulses and neurotransmitter release, forming interconnected circuits that integrate sensory, motor, cognitive, and autonomic information. Studying these structures and their connections helps neuroscientists link brain activity to behavior, identify how damage or disease disrupts function, and evaluate treatments. Methods including neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and lesion analysis reveal how specialized regions operate together as coordinated networks.

Micro-dissection of rat brain into various regions is extremely important for the study of different neurodegenerative diseases. This video demonstrates micro-dissection of four major brain regions include olfactory bulb, frontal cortex, striatum and hippocampus in fresh rat brain tissue. Useful tips for quick removal of respective regions to avoid RNA and protein degradation of the tissue are given.

Anatomy of the Brain: Major Regions

2025

The brain is the most complex organ in the human body. It consists of four main parts: the cerebrum, diencephalon, cerebellum, and brainstem. The cerebrum is the largest section of the brain and divides into left and right hemispheres, separated by a deep fissure. The cerebral outer layer of grey matter — the cerebral cortex — comprises elevations called gyri and shallow groves called sulci. The inner portion of white matter includes long nerve fibers known as axons, which connect various areas...

2025

This protocol outlines the use of immunohistochemistry to identify locus coeruleus regions in mouse brain sections. By targeting dopamine β-hydroxylase with green fluorophore-labeled antibodies, norepinephrine-producing neurons are visualized as green fluorescence under a microscope.
