Cell Attachment Ecm

Cell attachment to the extracellular matrix (ECM) is the process by which cells anchor to and interact with a protein-rich network surrounding them, enabling tissue organization and communication. In neural cells, transmembrane integrins bind ECM proteins such as laminin and fibronectin, linking them through focal adhesion complexes to the actin cytoskeleton and activating signals that regulate survival, migration, differentiation, and neurite extension. Studying this interaction helps explain how neurons navigate developing tissues, form connections, and respond to their physical environment. ECM-coated culture surfaces and engineered neural scaffolds also support controlled investigations of neuronal growth and repair.

Fibronectins Connect Cells with ECM

2023

Fibronectin is an adhesive glycoprotein present in the extracellular matrix of embryogenic and adult tissue. These molecules primarily aid in regulating cell motility and attachment. A fibronectin molecule is composed of two identical polypeptide chains attached to each other by a pair of disulfide bonds at the C-terminal. Both proteoglycans and collagen are attached to fibronectin proteins, which, in turn, are attached to integrin proteins. These integrin proteins interact with transmembrane...

Attachment is vital for infant development, as warm social interactions support growth and well-being. In a classic 1958 study by Harry Harlow, the significance of warmth and comfort in forming attachments was examined. Harlow separated newborn monkeys from their mothers and provided two artificial "mothers": one made of cold wire and the other covered in soft cloth. Despite the wire mother offering food, the infant monkeys preferred the comfort of the cloth mother, demonstrating that physical...

Described here is a procedure for obtaining long stretches of current recording from one ion channel with the cell-attached patch-clamp technique. This method allows for observing, in real time, the pattern of open-close channel conformations that underlie the biological signal. These data inform about channel properties in undisturbed biological membranes.
