Footshock Reinstatement

Footshock reinstatement is a behavioral neuroscience paradigm in which brief, noncontingent electric footshock triggers the return of a previously extinguished learned behavior, most often drug-seeking. After animals learn to associate cues or an environment with a reward and the response is extinguished, footshock serves as an aversive stressor that activates neural systems linking stress, context, and motivation, restoring behavioral responding. Researchers use this model to study stress-induced relapse, distinguish relapse mechanisms from initial learning, and evaluate candidate interventions that may reduce vulnerability to recurrence.

Animal models of relapse, known as reinstatement procedures, have been used extensively to study the role of stress in relapse to drug seeking. Here, we report on a method for inducing the reinstatement of cocaine seeking in laboratory rats via acute exposures to mild, intermittent electric footshock.

This protocol describes the Conditioned Place Preference (CPP) as a model of relapse. This procedure permits the measurement of relapse in laboratory animals, considering the impact of drug-associated environmental cues as craving and relapse in abstaining addicts is currently the focus of drug-abuse treatment programs.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation in a Rat Model to Reduce Freezing Behavior

(2015)This video demonstrates the method of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in a rat model to reduce freezing behavior. Fear-conditioned rats receive VNS during sound re-exposure, leading to reduced freezing and revealing its therapeutic potential.

Self-administration Studies

Behavioral reinforcement induced by the rewarding feelings following substance use sometimes leads to addiction, which is demonstrated by increased self-administration. Drug self-administration studies in rodents model human behavior during drug abuse. These models are useful in understanding the neurobiological behavior of addiction in order to help scientists discover new treatments for drug dependence. This video reviews the concepts underlying self-administration studies. A general...
