Neonatal Mouse Brain

The neonatal mouse brain is the developing brain of newborn mice, a widely used model for studying early neural development and brain function. During this period, neural progenitor cells generate neurons and glia, while synapse formation, axonal growth, myelination, and activity-dependent circuit refinement progressively establish functional networks. Researchers use neonatal mouse brains to investigate neurodevelopment, sensory experience, injury, disease mechanisms, and responses to genetic or pharmacological interventions. Because early postnatal changes can be measured across cellular, molecular, and behavioral levels, this model helps connect developmental processes with long-term neurological outcomes.

We performed unilateral carotid artery occlusion on postnatal day 7-10 CD-1 mouse pups to create a neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) model and investigated the effects of HI brain injury. We studied neurobehavioral functions in these mice compared to non-operated normal mice.

Obtaining a Mixed Glial Cell Culture from a Neonatal Mouse Brain

2025

The video demonstrated the method of isolating and culturing cells from a neonatal mouse brain. It involved enzymatic and mechanical dissociation of the brain, followed by culturing in growth media lacking neuronal growth factor to obtain a mixed glial population.

An Intracerebroventricular Injection to Analyze Murine Cytomegalovirus Distribution in a Neonatal Mouse Brain

2025

This video demonstrates the intracerebroventricular injection process for studying murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) distribution in the neonatal mouse brain. MCMV, engineered to express an enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) for visibility, is injected into the lateral ventricle of a mouse pup's brain. The injected virus circulates through the cerebrospinal fluid, infecting cells in the periventricular region, including the marginal zone, choroid plexus, and subventricular zone.

Establishing a Mouse Model of Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury

2025

The video demonstrates the procedure for creating a mouse model to study neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. It outlines the steps for surgically inducing ischemia and subjecting the animal to hypoxia to exacerbate brain damage. Finally, it shows how to assess the resulting brain lesions, ensuring the mouse model is prepared for further scientific investigation.

Primary mouse cardiomyocyte cultures are one of the pivotal tools for the investigation of myofibrillar organization and function. The following protocol describes the isolation and culture of primary cardiomyocytes from neonatal mouse hearts. The resulting cardiomyocyte cultures may be subsequently used for a variety of biomechanical, biochemical and cell-biological assays.
