Tms-eeg Protocol

TMS-EEG protocol is an experimental method that combines transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with electroencephalography (EEG) to measure brain responses to controlled magnetic stimulation, linking electromagnetic principles with systems neuroscience. A brief magnetic pulse delivered through a stimulation coil induces an electric field in cortical tissue, while EEG electrodes record the resulting time-resolved electrical activity; careful synchronization and management of stimulation-related artifacts are essential for interpreting the signal. In physics and neuroscience research, this approach helps characterize cortical excitability, inhibition, and functional connectivity, providing a noninvasive framework for studying how brain networks respond to perturbation and how these responses change across conditions or interventions.

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves passing current through an insulated coil placed against the scalp. A brief magnetic field is created by current in the coil, and because of the physical process of induction, this leads to a current in the nearby neural tissue. Depending on the duration, frequency, and magnitude of these magnetic...
