Convenience Sampling

Convenience sampling is a nonprobability sampling method that selects participants because they are readily available, making it a practical approach for collecting data when time, access, or resources are limited. In psychology research, investigators may recruit students, volunteers, patients, or online respondents who meet basic study criteria, but each individual’s chance of selection is unknown and the sample may not represent the broader population. Researchers use convenience samples for pilot studies, classroom research, questionnaire development, and early testing of hypotheses. Although efficient and often inexpensive, this method can introduce selection bias and limit the generalizability of findings, so researchers should report recruitment procedures and interpret results cautiously.

Sampling is a technique to select a portion (or subset) of the larger population and study that portion (the sample) to gain information about the population. Data are the result of sampling from a population. The sampling method ensures that samples are drawn without bias and accurately represent the population. Convenience sampling is a non-random method of sample selection; this method selects individuals that are easily accessible and may result in biased data. For example, a marketing...
