Absorbance Validation

Absorbance validation is the systematic assessment of whether absorbance measurements accurately, precisely, and consistently represent the concentration or optical properties of a sample. It typically uses blank correction, calibration standards, and replicate measurements to test linearity under the Beer-Lambert law, which relates absorbance to concentration and path length. In bioengineering, validated absorbance assays support quantification of proteins, nucleic acids, microbial growth, and colorimetric reaction products. Establishing accuracy, repeatability, and an appropriate measurement range improves confidence in experimental data and strengthens the reproducibility of diagnostic, bioprocessing, and biomaterials research.

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Gas absorbers are used to remove contaminants from gas streams. Multiple designs are used to accomplish this objective1. A packed bed column uses gas and liquid streams running counter to each other in a column packed with loose packing materials, such as ceramics, metals, and plastics, or structured packing1. The packed bed uses surface area created by the packing to...

Reliability and Validity

2020

Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways. Unfortunately, being consistent in measurement does not necessarily mean that you have measured something correctly. To illustrate this concept, consider a kitchen...
