Dissolved Organic Carbon

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is the fraction of organic carbon that passes through a filter and remains suspended in water, where it serves as a major source of energy and carbon for aquatic ecosystems. It enters lakes, rivers, soils, and oceans through plant residues, microbial activity, and runoff, then undergoes microbial decomposition, chemical transformation, and transport through connected environments. DOC can absorb light, influence water chemistry, and regulate how carbon moves between terrestrial, freshwater, and marine systems. Measuring DOC helps biologists assess ecosystem productivity, nutrient cycling, water quality, and the effects of environmental change on carbon storage.

Dissolved organic matter provides an important source of energy and nutrients to stream ecosystems. Here we demonstrate a field-based method to manipulate the ambient pool of dissolved organic matter in situ through easily replicable nutrient pulses.

Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) Labeling and Subsequent Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting for Culture-independent Identification of Dissolved Organic Carbon-degrading Bacterioplankton

Environmental bacterioplankton are incubated with a model dissolved organic carbon (DOC) compound and a DNA labeling reagent, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU). Afterward, DOC-degrading cells are separated from the bulk community based on their elevated BrdU incorporation using fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS). These cells are then identified by subsequent molecular analyses.

Labile organic carbon (LOC) and the potential carbon turnover rate are sensitive indicators of changes in soil nutrient cycling processes. Details are provided for a method based on fumigating and incubating soil in a series of cycles and using the CO2 accumulated during the incubation periods to estimate these parameters.

Dissolved Oxygen in Surface Water

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Dissolved oxygen (DO) measurements calculate the amount of gaseous oxygen dissolved in surface water, which is important to all oxygen-breathing life in river ecosystems, including fish species preferred for human consumption (e.g. bluegill and bass), as well as decomposer species critical to the recycling of biogeochemical materials in the system. The oxygen dissolved in lakes, rivers, and oceans is crucial for the...

The Carbon Cycle

2019

Carbon is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and is recycled through the ecosystem in two primary processes: one in which carbon is exchanged among living organisms, and one in which carbon is cycled over long periods of time through fossilized organic remains, weathering of rocks, and volcanic activity. Human activities, including increased agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels, has greatly affected the balance of the natural carbon cycle. Biological Carbon Cycle All...
