Ecosystem Scale Manipulation

Ecosystem Scale Manipulation is an ecological research approach that changes the spatial extent, size, or connectivity of experimental habitats to test how scale influences biological interactions and ecosystem function. Researchers may compare plots, enclosures, mesocosms, or landscape units while controlling or documenting factors such as resource availability, species composition, and environmental conditions; changing scale can alter encounter rates, dispersal, edge effects, and feedbacks between organisms and their surroundings. In biology, these experiments help distinguish local from landscape-level processes, evaluate biodiversity and productivity responses, and improve predictions about habitat fragmentation, restoration, climate change, and ecosystem management.

What is an Ecosystem?

2019

Overview An ecosystem is the interaction between all abiotic and biotic factors in an environment and can be classified as terrestrial or aquatic. Terrestrial ecosystems are categorized based on the climate, including annual temperature, rainfall, and seasonality. Aquatic ecosystems are separated further into freshwater and marine, and then by depth, which influences water temperature and the amount of sunlight that penetrates the water. Terrestrial Ecosystems Terrestrial ecosystems are...

Experimental Manipulation of Body Size to Estimate Morphological Scaling Relationships in Drosophila

Morphological scaling relationships capture and describe organismal shape. We present a method to measure morphological scaling relationships across the natural range of body sizes in fully metamorphic insects. Using a simple diet manipulation we increase the distribution of trait sizes, permitting the accurate description of how shape and size co-vary.

Nutrients in Aquatic Ecosystems

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Nitrogen and phosphorus are essential plant nutrients found in aquatic ecosystems and both are monitored as a part of water quality testing because in excess amounts they can cause significant water quality problems. Nitrogen in water is measured as the common form nitrate (NO3-) that is dissolved in water and readily absorbed by photosynthesizers such as algae. The common form of phosphorus measured is phosphate...

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment as a Useful Adjunctive Tool for Pneumonia

Cited by 50 •

2014

Pneumonia is one of the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S. Osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT) may be utilized as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of pneumonia to enhance biomechanical and immune function; and ultimately, to reduce hospital stay, duration of antibiotics, incidence of respiratory failure, and mortality. In this video-article, we will review randomized controlled studies on the use of OMT in pneumonia patients, as well as demonstrate specific hands-on...
