Erythroblast Enucleation

Erythroblast enucleation is the terminal step of mammalian red blood cell development in which a late-stage erythroblast expels its nucleus to form a reticulocyte, enabling production of mature, hemoglobin-rich erythrocytes. During this process, the nucleus condenses and moves to one side of the cell, while cytoskeletal remodeling and an actomyosin-based contractile apparatus help separate the nascent reticulocyte from the extruded nuclear pyrenocyte. This coordinated remodeling removes the nucleus and other organelles, creating a flexible, streamlined cell optimized for oxygen transport. Studying erythroblast enucleation clarifies normal erythropoiesis and supports research into anemia, red blood cell disorders, and engineered blood production.
