Hypotension Assessment

Hypotension assessment is the systematic evaluation of abnormally low blood pressure and its effects on tissue perfusion, helping identify whether reduced pressure is clinically significant. It combines repeated blood pressure measurements with evaluation of symptoms, heart rate, hydration status, and posture; orthostatic hypotension is assessed by comparing readings after lying down and standing, typically looking for a fall of at least 20 mmHg systolic or 10 mmHg diastolic within three minutes. In biology and clinical research, this assessment helps distinguish normal variation from circulatory dysfunction and supports investigation of dehydration, blood loss, medication effects, autonomic disorders, and cardiovascular disease.

The protocol here provides a rapid, phenotype-based approach for focused ultrasound evaluation of the hypotensive patient, using subcostal images of the inferior vena cava and heart, with additional views of the upper lungs and pleural spaces.

2-Vessel Occlusion/Hypotension: A Rat Model of Global Brain Ischemia

Bilateral carotid occlusion coupled with systemic hypotension produces global brain ischemia in the rat, resulting in damage to the hippocampus with reproducible severity. Animal subjects are impaired with predictable patterns of brain damage, they recover expediently, and mortality rates are comparatively low.

Assessing Myogenic Response and Vasoactivity In Resistance Mesenteric Arteries Using Pressure Myography

Pressure myography is used to assess vasoactivity of small arteries that develop sustained constriction when pressurized. This manuscript provides a detailed protocol to assess in isolated segments of small mesenteric arteries from rats, vasoactivity and the effect of intraluminal pressure on vascular diameter.

Here, we present a comprehensive behavioral test battery, including the novel tank, Shoaling, and social preference tests, to effectively determine the potential neurotoxic effects of chemicals (e.g., methamphetamine and glyphosate) on adult zebrafish using a single tank. This method is relevant to neurotoxicity and environmental research.

Systematic Assessment of Well-Being in Mice for Procedures Using General Anesthesia

We developed a protocol to assess well-being in mice during procedures using general anesthesia. A series of behavioral parameters indicating levels of well-being as well as glucocorticoid metabolites were analyzed. The protocol can serve as a general aid to estimate the degree of severity in a scientific, animal-centered manner.
