Minimal Media Selection

Minimal media selection is a microbiological method that uses a chemically defined growth medium with only essential nutrients to distinguish organisms according to their metabolic capabilities. The medium typically provides inorganic salts, a defined carbon source, and selected nutrients, so cells must synthesize any required amino acids, vitamins, or other metabolites; auxotrophic mutants cannot grow unless the missing compound is added. In biology, this approach supports the isolation and study of nutritional mutants, genetic complementation, and metabolic pathways. It also provides a controlled system for evaluating growth phenotypes and selecting cells that acquire functional genes through mutation or transformation.

Source: Christopher P. Corbo1, Jonathan F. Blaize1, Elizabeth Suter1 1 Department of Biological Sciences, Wagner College, 1 Campus Road, Staten Island NY, 10301 Prokaryotic cells are able to inhabit nearly every environment on this planet. As a kingdom, they possess a great metabolic diversity, allowing them to use a wide variety of molecules for energy generation (1). Therefore, when cultivating these organisms in the lab, all necessary and specific molecules required to make energy must be...

A simple and specific method was demonstrated for fluorescent labeling and enhanced detection of cell surface proteins without a fractionation step. Differential abundance in cell surface proteins was analyzed using two-dimensional (2-D) electrophoresis and Ettan™ DIGE technology.

Creating the Minimal Group Paradigm

Source: Julian Wills & Jay Van Bavel—New York University The study of intergroup relations, such as prejudice, conflict, and discrimination, has always been a central topic in social psychology. Does discrimination stem from competition with other groups, a history of conflict, or derogatory stereotypes? Despite an abundance of real-world examples, the ingredients that lead to intergroup discrimination are often unclear. To help solve this problem, a group of psychologists created "minimal...

Simulating Natural Selection ExpandTo begin, cut the white, black, and gray pipe cleaners into quarters, which should produce a total of 100 pieces that are 3 inches long. Then, cut the green pipe cleaners in the quantities and lengths specified in the video, taking care to minimize waste. This approximates a normal distribution of lengths and should result in an additional 100 pieces total. NOTE: One 12-inch pipe cleaner should yield multiple lengths, for example, a 5-inch piece and a 7-inch...

Technique and Patient Selection Criteria of Right Anterior Mini-Thoracotomy for Minimal Access Aortic Valve Replacement

The goal of this protocol is to describe in detail the technique of minimally invasive aortic valve replacement through a right anterior mini-thoracotomy and central aortic cannulation. This technique can potentially enhance patients' comfort and, by reducing post-operative morbidity, promote lowering the length of stay and global costs.
