Zebrafish Health Monitoring

Zebrafish health monitoring is the systematic assessment of fish condition, behavior, and housing environments to maintain animal welfare and support reliable biological research. It combines routine observation of swimming, feeding, body appearance, growth, mortality, and water-quality conditions with documented responses to abnormalities, helping researchers identify disease, stress, injury, or husbandry problems. Consistent monitoring is essential in developmental biology, genetics, toxicology, and disease models, where poor health can alter experimental outcomes and compromise reproducibility. Standardized records also support early intervention, responsible animal care, and the long-term quality of zebrafish research programs.

The innate immune response protects organisms against pathogen infection. A critical component of the innate immune response, the phagocyte respiratory burst, generates reactive oxygen species that kill invading microorganisms. We describe a respiratory burst assay that quantifies reactive oxygen species produced when the innate immune response is chemically induced.

Investigating the Potential of Singly Curved Thin Piezoelectric Transducers for Energy Harvesting and Structural Health Monitoring

Here, we experimentally compare singly curved and straight piezoelectric transducers embedded in reinforced concrete structures for energy harvesting and structural health monitoring by evaluating their open-circuit voltage, power generation, power storage, and damage detection capability. Curved transducers have surpassed the straight ones, offering better performance for real-world applications.

Monitoring Electrical Signals from the Afferent Neurons in an Immobilized Zebrafish Larva

This video demonstrates the recording of electrical signals from the afferent neurons in a paralyzed zebrafish larva by positioning a micropipette near the lateral line ganglion and forming a loose seal for signal capture. The extracellular solution maintains neuronal viability during this process.

The present protocol introduces a non-commercial self-developed application for collecting real-time on-site data, including psychological scales, GPS location, heart rate, and blood-oxygen saturation level, as well as the application's operating procedures. An empirical study conducted in Taiwan in 2020 was used as an application example.
