Basic Alumina Chromatography

Basic alumina chromatography is an adsorption-based separation method that uses basic aluminum oxide, or alumina, as the stationary phase to isolate components of a mixture, making it valuable for analytical and preparative chemistry. Its polar surface retains compounds through differences in adsorption strength, while a mobile solvent carries less strongly retained substances through a column; adjusting solvent polarity changes elution order and resolution. Chemists apply this technique to purify organic compounds, separate reaction products, and assess sample composition, with basic conditions helping limit interactions that can affect acid-sensitive analytes. By linking stationary-phase chemistry to retention behavior, it supports practical understanding of adsorption, polarity, and chromatographic method design.

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Surface area and pore size distribution are attributes used by adsorbent and catalyst manufacturers and users to ensure quality control and to determine when products are at the end of their useful lives. The surface area of a porous solid is directly related to its adsorption capacity or catalytic activity. The pore size distribution of an adsorbent or catalyst is...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Jimmy Franco - Merrimack College Column chromatography is one of the most useful techniques for purifying compounds. This technique utilizes a stationary phase, which is packed in a column, and a mobile phase that passes through the column. This technique exploits the differences in polarity between compounds, allowing the molecules to be facilely separated.1 The two most common stationary phases for column chromatography are silica gel (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3), with...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Ion-exchange chromatography is a type of chromatography that separates analytes based on charge. A column is used that is filled with a charged stationary phase on a solid support, called an ion-exchange resin. Strong cation-exchange chromatography preferentially separates out cations by using a negatively-charged resin while strong anion-exchange chromatography preferentially selects out anions by using a positively-charged...

Chemical reactions, such as those that occur when you light a match, involve changes in energy as well as matter. Chemical changes and their accompanying changes in energy are important parts of everyday life. The macronutrients in food undergo metabolic reactions that provide the energy to keep bodies functioning. A variety of fuels (gasoline, natural gas, coal) is burned to produce energy for transportation, heating, and the generation of electricity. Industrial chemical reactions use...
