Biodistribution Studies

Biodistribution studies determine where a compound, drug, or biologic travels, accumulates, and clears within an organism, providing essential evidence about its behavior and safety. Researchers administer a defined dose, collect biological tissues or fluids at selected time points, and measure the substance or its metabolites using analytical methods such as mass spectrometry or radiotracer detection. In chemistry, these studies connect molecular structure and formulation with absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion patterns. The results help identify target-tissue exposure, potential off-target accumulation, pharmacokinetic behavior, and dose-related risks, supporting drug development, nanomaterial evaluation, and the design of more effective delivery systems.

An In Vivo Immunofluorescence Localization Method to Study Antibody Biodistribution

2025

This video demonstrates an in vivo immunofluorescence localization (IVIL) technique to study the biodistribution of tumor-targeting antibodies in a murine model of breast cancer. Upon the intravenous injection of a tumor-specific antibody in the mouse, the tumor is surgically isolated, and the localization of the antibody within the tumor tissue is confirmed via ex vivo immunostaining.

Source: Peiman Shahbeigi-Roodposhti and Sina Shahbazmohamadi, Biomedical Engineering Department, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut Nanoparticles have been increasingly used research towards targeted drug delivery and controlled drug release. While most of these particles have been developed as polymeric or liposomal particles because of their biocompatibility, there is a trend in current research toward the use of metallic and magnetic nanoparticles. These metallic nanoparticles...

Acute and Chronic Models of Hyperglycemia in Zebrafish: A Method to Assess the Impact of Hyperglycemia on Neurogenesis and the Biodistribution of Radiolabeled Molecules

This work describes methods to establish acute and chronic hyperglycemia models in zebrafish. The aim is to investigate the impact of hyperglycemia on physiological processes, such as constitutive and injury-induced neurogenesis. The work also highlights the use of zebrafish to follow radiolabeled molecules (here, [18F]-FDG) using PET/CT.

There are many research methods available to psychologists in their efforts to understand, describe, and explain behavior and the cognitive and biological processes that underlie it. In 2011, the New York Times published a feature story on Krista and Tatiana Hogan, Canadian twin girls. These particular twins are unique because Krista and Tatiana are conjoined twins, connected at the head. There is evidence that the two girls are connected in a part of the brain called the thalamus, which is a...
