Pressure Sensor Measurement

Pressure sensor measurement is the determination of force exerted by a gas or liquid per unit area, a parameter that helps characterize and control chemical systems. In a typical sensor, pressure deflects a flexible diaphragm, and this deformation changes an electrical property such as resistance or capacitance; calibration then relates the signal to pressure units. In chemistry, these measurements support monitoring gas reactions, vapor pressure, sealed vessels, flow systems, and high-pressure experiments. Reliable pressure data can reveal reaction progress, maintain safe operating conditions, and improve control of processes involving volatile materials, gases, or phase changes.

A novel technique to record the pressures within the skull is described. The minimally invasive method uses a fibre-optic pressure sensing system to accurately measure intracranial pressure (ICP) in anaesthetized rats without causing significant brain trauma. The technique may be used in a wide range of experimental models.

Source: Hamna J. Qureshi and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will highlight the key similarities and differences of noninvasive blood pressure measurement techniques between humans and rodents and examine the engineering principles that govern blood pressure. The principles that govern current cuff technology to acquire systolic and diastolic pressures will also be discussed. Commercially available cuffs that connect...

Here we present a protocol to simply and reliably measure the lung pressure-volume curve in mice, showing that it is sufficiently sensitive to detect phenotypic parenchymal changes in two common lung pathologies, pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema. This metric provides a means to quantify the lung’s structural changes with developing pathology.

Spatial Measurement of Tumor Interstitial Fluid Pressure: A Method to Measure the Interstitial Fluid Pressure
