Wedge Dash Representation

Wedge dash representation is a chemical drawing convention that shows the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms around a stereocenter, allowing molecular geometry to be communicated on a two-dimensional page. A solid wedge indicates a bond projecting toward the viewer, a dashed wedge indicates a bond extending behind the page, and a straight line represents a bond in the plane. This notation is especially important for tetrahedral carbon atoms, where different spatial arrangements can produce stereoisomers with distinct properties. By clarifying chirality and relative configuration, wedge dash drawings support structure identification, stereochemical analysis, reaction interpretation, and communication in organic and medicinal chemistry.

A wedge is a simple machine that serves various purposes, such as adjusting the elevation of structural or mechanical parts, providing stability for heavy objects, and splitting a body into two parts. This versatile tool can amplify an applied force, making it easier to manipulate large or heavy objects. Consider using a wedge to lift a heavy slab. Here, the wedge functions by converting the applied force into a much larger force directed almost perpendicular to the initial force. This...

This video demonstrates the process of preparing wedge-shaped brain slices in a laboratory setting. Using a vibratome, a wedge-shaped slice from a mouse's brain is crafted with varying thickness. This slice contains the auditory nerve root positioned on the thicker end, while the hearing-related neurons are located on the thinner end.

The frequency-domain technique, commonly used in analyzing and designing feedback control systems, is effective for linear, time-invariant systems. However, it falls short when dealing with nonlinear, time-varying, and multiple-input multiple-output systems. The time-domain or state-space approach addresses these limitations by utilizing state variables to construct simultaneous, first-order differential equations, known as state equations, for an nth-order system. Consider an RLC circuit, a...

Control Volume and System Representations

Two key frameworks are employed to analyze mass, energy, and momentum transfer: the control volume approach and the system approach. These frameworks offer different perspectives, depending on whether the focus is on a specific region in space (control volume approach) or a defined mass of fluid (system approach). The control volume approach considers a stationary region in space through which fluid flows. This region is bounded by a control surface. For instance, in the case of water flowing...
