Oxygen Flow Rate

Oxygen flow rate is the volume of supplemental oxygen delivered to a patient each minute, typically measured in liters per minute, and is a key parameter in clinical respiratory care. It regulates oxygen movement through devices such as nasal cannulas, simple masks, and other delivery systems, while the resulting inspired oxygen concentration also depends on device design, breathing pattern, and room-air entrainment. Clinicians adjust flow rates to support oxygenation during conditions such as hypoxemia, respiratory distress, anesthesia, and recovery. Appropriate titration helps meet oxygen targets while limiting unnecessary exposure and potential complications, making accurate monitoring and device selection essential.

Mass Conservation and Flow Rate Measurements

2023

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the calibration of a flow passage as a flowmeter using a control volume (CV) formulation [1, 2]. The CV analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a detailed differential analysis. These two techniques should be...

Topical Airway Anesthesia for Awake-endoscopic Intubation Using the Spray-as-you-go Technique with High Oxygen Flow

The topical anesthetic lidocaine was atomized using a high oxygen flow through the working channel of a flexible intubating endoscope to achieve topical airway anesthesia for awake endotracheal intubation. We prefer this modified spray-as-you-go technique for endoscopic intubation to classical bolus application because of higher patient satisfaction and better compliance.

Mitochondrial respiration is critical for organismal survival; therefore, oxygen consumption rate is an excellent indicator of mitochondrial health. In this protocol, we describe the use of a commercially available respirometer to measure basal and maximal oxygen consumption rates in live, intact, and freely-motile Caenorhabditis elegans.
