Procedure Completion

Procedure completion is the final phase of a clinical procedure, when the intervention is concluded and the patient, procedure site, equipment, and records are prepared for continued care. It typically involves confirming the intended result, controlling bleeding or contamination, removing instruments and temporary materials, securing dressings or closures, reconciling specimens, and documenting key findings and events. Careful completion supports patient safety by reducing retained-item and communication risks, while accurate documentation enables handoff, follow-up, quality review, and legal accountability. Standardized completion processes also help clinical teams identify complications early and promote consistent outcomes across procedures and care settings.
