Anisotropic Leaky Mode Modulator

An anisotropic leaky mode modulator is an optical device that controls light by using direction-dependent material or structural properties to couple guided energy into radiative modes. Its operation relies on resonance: anisotropy makes the leaky mode respond differently to orthogonal polarizations or propagation directions, while an external control stimulus shifts the resonance and alters transmission, reflection, or polarization. In engineering, this principle supports compact intensity and polarization modulators, tunable filters, beam-steering components, and integrated photonic systems. Studying the device connects electromagnetic mode coupling, resonance design, and waveguide engineering, with applications in optical communication, sensing, and reconfigurable displays.

During most eukaryotic translation processes, the small 40S ribosome subunit scans an mRNA from its 5' end until it encounters the first start AUG codon. The large 60S ribosomal subunit then joins the smaller one to initiate protein synthesis. The location of the translation initiation is largely determined by the nucleotides near the start codon as there may be multiple translation initiation sites present on the mRNA. Marilyn Kozak discovered that the sequence RCCAUGG (where R stands for...
