Posture Estimation

Posture estimation is the computational process of inferring a person’s body configuration from images, video, or sensor data, enabling machines to interpret human movement and position. It typically combines computer vision or depth sensing with machine-learning models that detect anatomical landmarks, such as joints, and connect them into a two-dimensional or three-dimensional skeletal representation; temporal analysis can then track changes across frames. In engineering, posture estimation supports ergonomic risk assessment, collaborative robotics, human-computer interaction, motion analysis, and safety monitoring. Reliable estimates can help quantify awkward positions, improve worker-machine coordination, and guide systems that respond to human behavior in real time.

Substantiating Appropriate Motion Capture Techniques for the Assessment of Nordic Walking Gait and Posture in Older Adults

The aim was to substantiate optimal use of data collection techniques for Nordic walking gait and posture analysis. Three-dimensional motion capture should be used during short duration analysis (i.e. single gait cycle), while accelerometry should be employed for longer duration analysis (i.e. repeated cycles) like a 6 Minute Walk Test.

Computerized Dynamic Posturography for Postural Control Assessment in Patients with Intermittent Claudication

Individuals with intermittent claudication exhibit poor balance compared to healthy controls. Computerized dynamic posturography is an objective method for measuring an individual's postural responses to balance disturbances. This provides an objective reflection of the person’s ability to respond to situations under which sensory stimuli are altered and unexpected perturbations occur.

An Instrumented Pull Test to Characterize Postural Responses

Impairment of postural reflexes, termed postural instability, is difficult to quantify. Clinical assessments such as the pull test suffer issues with reliability and scaling. Here, we present an instrumented version of the pull test to objectively characterize postural responses.

What are Estimates?

It isn't easy to measure a parameter such as the mean height or the mean weight of a population. So, we draw samples from the population and calculate the mean height or mean weight of the individuals in the sample. This sample data acts as a representative measure of the population parameter. These sample statistics are known as estimates. The estimate for the mean of a sample is denoted by ͞x, whereas the mean of the population is designated as μ. Further, parameters such as the mean,...
