Shear Force

Shear force is an internal force that acts parallel to a cross-section of a material or structural member, tending to make adjacent parts slide past one another. In engineering analysis, external loads and support reactions create this force, whose magnitude changes along a beam or component and can be represented with a shear-force diagram; excessive shear may produce sliding failure or cracking. Engineers evaluate shear force when sizing beams, joints, fasteners, and mechanical parts, often alongside bending moment and normal stress. Understanding its distribution supports safer designs, more efficient material use, and accurate prediction of structural performance under applied loads.

Normal and Shear Force

When a beam is subjected to different loads, such as weight, pressure, or other external forces, internal forces are generated within the beam. These forces can have a significant impact on the overall stability and strength of the structure. Engineers use various methods to analyze and determine the magnitude and direction of these internal forces. One common technique used to determine internal forces in beams is the method of sections. This method involves considering an imaginary point or...

Different levels and patterns of fluid shear are known to modulate endothelial gene expression, phenotype and susceptibility to disease. We discuss the assembly and use of 'shear rings': a model that produces unidirectional, periodic shear stress patterns. Shear rings are simple to assemble, economical and can produce high cell yields.
