Step Response Analysis

Step response analysis is an engineering method for evaluating how a dynamic system reacts over time to a sudden, sustained change in its input. By applying a step signal and measuring the output, engineers characterize transient behavior as the system moves toward its steady-state value, including rise time, settling time, peak overshoot, and steady-state error. In control systems, the response reflects system poles, damping, natural frequency, and feedback structure, making it a practical indicator of stability and performance. This analysis supports controller tuning, model validation, and design decisions in systems such as motors, circuits, mechanical assemblies, and process-control equipment.
