Swimming Ability Assessment

Swimming ability assessment is the systematic evaluation of how effectively an organism moves through water, providing insight into locomotion, physiological performance, and environmental fitness. Researchers measure responses such as swimming speed, distance, endurance, orientation, or escape behavior under standardized conditions, often comparing exposed organisms with controls to identify changes in motor function. In environmental research, these assessments help reveal the effects of pollutants, temperature, oxygen availability, habitat conditions, and other stressors on aquatic organisms. Results can support ecotoxicology studies, environmental monitoring, and risk assessment by linking sublethal behavioral changes to potential consequences for survival, feeding, predator avoidance, and population health.

Cited by 541 •

2012

The forced swim test is validated as an experimental approach to assess potential antidepressant efficacy in rodents. Experimental animals are placed in a tank of water and escape-related mobility behavior is quantified. The common procedures for the mouse version of this test are described.

Assessing Differences in Sperm Competitive Ability in Drosophila

Differential sperm competitive ability among Drosophila males with distinct genotypes can be ascertained through double-mating experiments. Each of these experiments involves one of the males of interest and a reference male. Readily identifiable markers in the progeny allow inference of the fraction of individuals fathered by each male.

Capable of functional recovery after spinal cord injury, adult zebrafish is a premier model system to elucidate innate mechanisms of neural regeneration. Here, we describe swim endurance and swim behavior assays as functional readouts of spinal cord regeneration.

The Forced Swim Test as a Model of Depressive-like Behavior

This protocol describes the forced swim test, which is used for the study of depressive-like behavior in rodents. This procedure involves placing an animal in a container filled with water that eventually will lead to the exhibition of immobility behavior, which is considered to reflect behavioral despair.
