Visual Microscopic Evaluation

Visual microscopic evaluation is the systematic examination of cells, tissues, or microorganisms through a microscope to identify structural features that are not visible to the unaided eye. The process typically involves preparing a specimen, applying an appropriate stain when needed, and using controlled magnification and illumination to assess morphology, cellular organization, and observable interactions. In immunology and infection research, this approach helps characterize immune-cell responses, recognize microbial forms, and compare changes in infected or inflamed samples. Although largely qualitative, microscopic evaluation provides essential evidence for interpreting disease processes, guiding further laboratory testing, and documenting experimental findings.

Source: Brown, A. O., et al. Visualization of Streptococcus pneumoniae within Cardiac Microlesions and Subsequent Cardiac Remodeling. J. Vis. Exp. (2015).This video demonstrates the microscopic visualization of bacterial microlesions in mouse heart tissue. The heart of a mouse infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae is harvested, washed, and fixed before being processed to obtain coronal sections. These sections are stained with hematoxylin and eosin and examined under a microscope to visualize...
