Frameless Stereotaxy

Frameless stereotaxy is an image-guided neurosurgical technique that enables clinicians to localize intracranial targets without using a rigid stereotactic frame. Before surgery, three-dimensional CT or MRI data are registered to the patient’s head using fiducial markers or anatomical landmarks, allowing a tracking system to continuously relate surgical instruments to the reconstructed brain anatomy. This guidance supports precise planning and execution of procedures such as brain biopsy, tumor resection, catheter placement, and deep-brain electrode implantation. By improving spatial orientation and limiting the need for fixed head frames, frameless stereotaxy can streamline selected interventions while helping surgeons avoid critical neurological structures.

Rodent Stereotaxic Surgery

2023

Stereotaxic (or stereotactic) surgery is a method used to manipulate the brain of living animals. This technique allows researchers to accurately target deep structures within the brain through the use of a stereotaxic atlas, which provides the 3D coordinates of each area with respect to anatomical landmarks on the skull. After the skull is exposed, anesthetized animals are mounted on a specialized instrument known as a stereotaxic frame, which enables the precise placement of experimental...

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a technique for non-invasively disrupting neural information processing and measuring its effect on behavior. When TMS interferes with a task, it indicates that the stimulated brain region is necessary for normal task performance, allowing one to systematically relate brain regions to cognitive functions.

This paper demonstrates the performance of acupuncture, epilepsy models, and the analysis of sleep in rodents. The acupuncture procedure and the identification of acupoints are described. Pilocarpine or pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) is used to induce epilepsy. Electrocorticogram (ECoG), electromyogram (EMG), brain temperature, and locomotor activity recordings are employed for sleep analysis.
