Lower Limb Circulation

Lower limb circulation is the movement of oxygenated blood through the arteries and microvessels of the legs and feet, followed by venous return to the heart; it supports tissue metabolism, temperature regulation, and mobility. Blood travels from the aorta through the iliac and femoral arteries into progressively smaller vessels, while arteriolar resistance adjusts regional flow. Veins return blood with help from one-way valves and the calf-muscle pump, which compresses veins during movement and limits pooling. Understanding this system supports clinical assessment of pulses, capillary refill, and Doppler signals, and helps identify peripheral artery disease, venous insufficiency, deep-vein thrombosis, and threatened limb ischemia.

Non-Invasive Limb Ischemic Preconditioning in a Rat Model for Neuroprotection

Source: Brandli, A. Remote Limb Ischemic Preconditioning: A Neuroprotective Technique in Rodents. J. Vis. Exp. (2015)This video demonstrates a non-invasive limb ischemic preconditioning protocol in rats to induce systemic neuroprotection. The procedure involves controlled arterial occlusion and reperfusion, triggering cellular stress pathways that release protective factors. These factors enhance resistance to ischemic and metabolic injuries in distant organs such as the brain and retina.

Predicting Amputation using Local Circulating Mononuclear Progenitor Cells in Angioplasty-treated Patients with Critical Limb Ischemia

Lower limb amputation may occur even after angioplasty of obstructed vessels in Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI). Mononuclear Progenitor Cells (MPCs) reflect vascular repair. The present protocol describes the quantification of MPCs from circulation close to angioplasty, and its relationship with endothelial dysfunction and prediction of lower limb amputation.

Fetal Circulation

2024

Fetal circulation is a unique system that facilitates the exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste products between the developing fetus and the mother. This intricate process takes place through a special organ called the placenta. Two umbilical arteries transport blood from the fetus to the placenta. At the placenta, the blood absorbs oxygen and nutrients while simultaneously eliminating waste products. This oxygen-enriched and nutrient-rich blood then returns to the fetus through one...

Coronary Circulation

The heart, an organ critical to survival, gets nourishment not from the blood it pumps but from a separate circulation system known as coronary circulation. This is the shortest circulation in the body and is responsible for supplying the heart with the nutrients it needs to function effectively. Coronary circulation begins at the base of the aorta, where two main arteries arise—the left and right coronary arteries. These arteries encircle the heart in the coronary sulcus and supply the...
