Molecular Biomarkers

Molecular biomarkers are measurable biological molecules or molecular signatures that indicate normal physiology, disease processes, or responses to treatment, making them valuable tools in modern medicine. They arise from changes in nucleic acids, proteins, metabolites, or other cellular components and can be measured in tissues or body fluids using methods such as sequencing, PCR, immunoassays, and mass spectrometry. Clinicians and researchers use these markers to support diagnosis, estimate prognosis, identify patients likely to benefit from specific therapies, and monitor disease or treatment response. Their integration with clinical data advances precision medicine while requiring careful validation for accuracy, reproducibility, and clinical utility.

We developed a technology based on mesoporous silica thin film for the selective recovery of low molecular weight proteins and peptides from human serum. The physico-chemical properties of our mesoporous chips were finely tuned to provide substantial control in peptide enrichment and consequently profile the serum proteome for diagnostic purposes.

2012

We describe a rat model of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that reveals the persistent alterations in neuroendocrine function and the delayed long-term, exaggerated fear response, characteristic of PTSD patients. The animal model and methods described here are useful for correlating biomarkers in brain nuclei, which are mechanistic but cannot be measured in patients, with biomarkers in peripheral white blood cells, which can.

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst The material comprising the living "organic" share of any ecosystem (leaves, fungi, bark, tissue; Figure 1) differs fundamentally from the material of the non-living "inorganic" share (rocks and their constituent minerals, oxygen, water, metals). Organic material contains carbon linked to a series of other carbon and hydrogen molecules (Figure 2), which distinguishes it from inorganic material. Carbon's wide valency range...
