Obsessive-compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental health condition marked by persistent, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges called obsessions and repetitive behaviors or mental acts called compulsions. These symptoms arise from a cycle in which obsessions generate distress, compulsions temporarily reduce that distress, and short-term relief reinforces repetition; altered brain circuitry and neurotransmitter signaling may also contribute. In medicine, assessment focuses on symptom patterns, time burden, distress, and interference with daily functioning while distinguishing OCD from related conditions. Evidence-based care, including exposure and response prevention, cognitive behavioral therapy, and selected medications, can reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.

Exploring the Neural Correlates of Cognitive Reappraisal in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Using Task-based Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging

2025

We introduce a protocol for exploring the neural correlates of a cognitive emotion regulation task, namely cognitive reappraisal, using functional magnetic resonance imaging. This protocol was used in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and healthy controls but can also be used in other clinical samples.
