Skin Paddle Exteriorization

Skin paddle exteriorization is a surgical technique that brings a skin-bearing portion of a tissue flap through the body surface and secures it to surrounding skin. The exteriorized skin paddle remains connected to its underlying blood supply, allowing the transferred tissue to receive perfusion while covering or reconstructing a defect; surgeons may also assess its color, temperature, and bleeding as indicators of viability. In reconstructive medicine, this approach can provide durable soft-tissue coverage after trauma, tumor removal, or complex wound formation. Understanding the technique supports surgical planning, postoperative monitoring, and early recognition of compromised flap circulation.

Mice can swim, but many strains appear to find this activity stressful. To overcome this problem mazes have been devised where escape from shallow water is used to motivate behaviour. These have been demonstrated to support learning at least as good as the traditional and widely used Morris water maze.

Source: Remacle, T., et al. Treating Low Back Pain in Failed Back Surgery Patients with Multicolumn-lead Spinal Cord Stimulation. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the method of using multicolumn paddle lead spinal cord stimulation to manage chronic lower back pain in Failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) patients. The pre-implanted lead delivers targeted electrical pulses that activate non-painful sensory pathways, interrupting pain signals and reducing pain perception.

This article describes a simple model for stimulating angiogenesis in the rat mesentery. The model produces dramatic increases in capillary sprouting, vascular area and vascular density over a relatively short time course in a tissue that allows en face visualization of entire microvascular networks down to the single cell level.

Skin lesions are common and important features in many rheumatic diseases, and biopsy with pathological analysis plays a critical role in diagnosis. This article provides a detailed overview of the standardized skin biopsy procedure and, using discoid lupus erythematosus as an example, highlights the essential role of dermatopathology in diagnosing rheumatic diseases.
