Specimen-driven Ioarm

Specimen-driven IOARM, or intraoperative assessment of resection margins, is a surgical pathology approach that evaluates an excised specimen during an operation to determine whether disease reaches its edges. The specimen is oriented, the relevant margins are identified, and rapid imaging or pathological assessment provides immediate information that can guide additional tissue removal before closure. In medicine, this approach supports cancer surgery by helping reduce positive margins while limiting unnecessary removal of healthy tissue. It also strengthens communication between surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists, linking intraoperative decision-making with definitive histopathological evaluation and improving the precision of oncologic procedures.

Isolating electrical and thermal effects on electrically assisted deformation (EAD) is very difficult using macroscopic samples. Metallic sample micro- and nanostructures together with a custom test procedure have been developed to evaluate the impact of applied current on the formation without joule heating and evolution of dislocations on these samples.

We used retinal samples from retinectomy for a transcriptomic analysis of retinal detachment. We developed a procedure that allows RNA conservation between the surgical blocks and the laboratory. We standardized a protocol to purify RNA by cesium chloride ultracentrifugation to assure that the purified RNAs are suitable for microarray analysis.
