Subthalamic Nucleus

The subthalamic nucleus (STN) is a small, lens-shaped structure in the diencephalon that forms a key excitatory component of the basal ganglia, the network that helps regulate movement. It receives inhibitory input from the external globus pallidus and sends glutamatergic signals to the internal globus pallidus and substantia nigra pars reticulata, thereby increasing inhibitory output to the thalamus and shaping motor commands. In medicine, STN dysfunction is strongly associated with Parkinson’s disease, while its anatomy and circuitry guide deep brain stimulation, a treatment that can reduce motor symptoms by modulating abnormal network activity.

A method for implanting electrodes into the subthalamic nucleus (STN) of rats is described. Better localization of the STN was achieved by using a microrecording system. Furthermore, a stimulation set-up is presented that is characterized by long-lasting connections between the head of the animal and the stimulator.

Co-culturing of Ventral Hippocampal and Nucleus Accumbens

This video demonstrates the process of preparing ventral hippocampal and nucleus accumbens tissues from mouse brains for co-culture. Neurons extend projections to form synaptic connections between the ventral hippocampal and nucleus accumbens tissues. This method allows studying neuronal interactions between these two brain regions, offering insights into cognition, behavior, and neurological disorders.

The nucleus is a membrane-bound organelle that acts as a control center in a eukaryotic cell. It contains chromosomal DNA, which controls gene expression and precisely regulates the production of proteins within the cell. In contrast, the DNA inside the mitochondria and chloroplast only carries out functions that are specific to those organelles. Arrangement of DNA within Nucleus The regulation of gene expression inside the nucleus is dependent on many factors, including the DNA structure. The...
