Treatment Patterns

Treatment patterns describe how medical therapies are selected, sequenced, timed, and continued across patients or populations, providing insight into real-world clinical practice. Researchers analyze electronic health records, insurance claims, registries, and clinical data to identify prescribing trends, treatment changes, adherence, and variation among patient groups. In medicine, these analyses help evaluate whether care aligns with evidence-based guidelines, reveal gaps in access or quality, and clarify how treatment choices relate to outcomes. Understanding treatment patterns supports comparative effectiveness research, healthcare planning, resource allocation, and the development of more consistent, patient-centered strategies.

Source: Spiesz, E. M., et al., Three-dimensional Patterning of Engineered Biofilms with a Do-it-yourself Bioprinter. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates a method for comparing 3D-printed alginate patterns containing either control or genetically engineered bacterial strains. The test strain produces curli fibers upon induction, which reinforce the alginate hydrogel structure. Following treatment with a calcium-chelating solution, only the test pattern remains intact, highlighting the...

Cross-Modal Multivariate Pattern Analysis

Classical multivariate pattern analysis predicts sensory stimuli a subject perceives from neural activity in the corresponding cortices (e.g. visual stimuli from activity in visual cortex). Here, we apply pattern analysis cross-modally and show that sound- and touch-implying visual stimuli can be predicted from activity in auditory and somatosensory cortices, respectively.
