Deep Perineal Nerve

The deep perineal nerve is a motor branch of the pudendal nerve that innervates key muscles of the urogenital triangle and supports pelvic floor function. After entering the perineum, it courses through the perineal membrane alongside the internal pudendal vessels, giving branches to the external urethral sphincter and deep perineal muscles; associated sensory fibers may also convey information from nearby tissues. In neuroscience and clinical anatomy, tracing this nerve helps explain urinary continence, voluntary control of perineal muscles, and the effects of pudendal nerve injury. Its anatomy also informs pelvic surgery, regional anesthesia, and evaluation of pelvic floor disorders.

2025

Source: Svientek, S. R., et al. Fabrication of the Composite Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (C-RPNI) in the Adult Rat. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates the surgical construction of a composite regenerative peripheral nerve interface (C-RPNI) in a rat model of peripheral nerve injury. The procedure involves attaching a transected peroneal nerve to a muscle graft and overlaying it with a dermal skin graft to promote nerve regeneration. Over time, motor and sensory neurons...

The Spared Nerve Injury (SNI) Model of Induced Mechanical Allodynia in Mice

Cited by 97 •

2011

The Spared Nerve Injury animal model is described here as a mouse model of peripheral neuropathic pain following partial denervation of the sciatic nerve by lesioning the tibial and common peroneal nerve branches, leaving the remaining sural nerve intact. Behavioral modification resulting from mechanical allodynia is quantified by von Frey filaments.

Toluidine Blue Staining of Peripheral Nerve Sections: A Technique to Stain Myelinated Nerve Fibers For Peripheral Nerve Structure Visualization

This video demonstrates the staining technique of resin-embedded, osmium tetroxide-treated rat peripheral nerve sections using toluidine blue. The stained nerve sections help visualize the fine structures of peripheral nerves.

Murine Sciatic Nerve Model of Perineural Invasion or PNI: Extraction and Processing of Sciatic Nerve to Understand Invasion by Cancer Cells

2025

In this video, we describe the procedure to establish a murine model of perineural invasion by injecting cancer cells into the sciatic nerve. The model can help gain an understanding of the magnitude of nerve invasion for subsequent assessment of anti-cancer drugs.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation via Chronically Implanted Peripheral Nerve Cuff Electrodes in Rats

Source: Sanchez, C. A., et al. Preparation of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Electrodes for Chronic Implantation in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates vagus nerve stimulation in an awake rat. A rat with an implanted chronic peripheral nerve cuff electrode and trained in a lever press task is connected to a stimulus generator via an implanted head cap. The vagus nerve is stimulated immediately after each successful lever press, resulting in the expansion of the motor map.
