Drug Perfusion Method

Drug perfusion is a method for delivering a controlled solution of a pharmacological compound through a perfusion system, often to isolated tissue or a defined region of the nervous system. The method uses a pump, reservoir, and delivery pathway to regulate drug concentration, flow rate, exposure time, and, when needed, local administration through a cannula or microfluidic interface. In neuroscience, drug perfusion enables researchers to manipulate neurotransmitter receptors, ion channels, or signaling pathways while monitoring neural activity, synaptic function, or behavior. Its precise timing and dosing support causal studies of brain circuits and evaluation of potential therapeutic mechanisms.

2010

Operant drug self-administration and conditioned place preference (CPP) procedures are expansively used in research to model various components of drug reinforcement, consumption, and addiction in humans. In this report, we combined traditional CPP and self-administration methods as a novel approach to studying drug reinforcement and addiction in rats.

Osmotic Drug Delivery to Ischemic Hindlimbs and Perfusion of Vasculature with Microfil for Micro-Computed Tomography Imaging

Factors Affecting Drug Distribution: Organ Perfusion Rate

2025

Drug distribution within the body is a complex process influenced by several factors, including perfusion rate, the rate at which the bloodstream transports drugs to tissue. This limitation becomes particularly significant when dealing with highly lipophilic drugs. In such cases, the rate at which the drug can move across membranes is crucial, and if the membrane is highly permeable to the drug, distribution becomes rate-limited by perfusion. Perfusion rate-limited distribution relies on the...

2015

Ex-Vivo Lung Perfusion (EVLP) has allowed lung transplantation in humans to become more readily available by enabling the ability to assess organs and expand the donor pool. Here, we describe the development of a rat EVLP program and refinements that allow for a reproducible model for future expansion.
