Heart Perfusion Apparatus

A heart perfusion apparatus is a laboratory system that keeps an isolated heart functional by delivering a controlled, oxygenated perfusion solution, enabling researchers to study cardiac activity outside the body. In a typical setup, a pump directs perfusate through the coronary circulation under regulated pressure or flow, supplying oxygen and nutrients while allowing measurement of contractility, rhythm, and vascular responses. In neuroscience, this preparation supports investigation of neurocardiac signaling, autonomic influences, and cardiac responses to neurotransmitters or pharmacological agents without confounding effects from other organs. It also provides a controlled platform for studying heart physiology, disease mechanisms, and potential therapies.

Langendorff Retrograde Heart Perfusion: An Ex Vivo Technique to Perfuse Isolated Mouse Heart

2025

In this video, we perform Langendorff retrograde perfusion of an isolated mouse heart. During the procedure, the cardiac activity of the heart is maintained by perfusing it retrogradely with a perfusion solution via the coronary arteries using a cannula inserted into the ascending aorta. The model is used to study the cardiac pathophysiology of the heart.

This video describes an ex situ technique for preserving an isolated porcine heart by perfusing it with an oxygenated nutrient-rich perfusate solution. The technique allows the comprehensive evaluation of cardiac performance under physiological conditions.

Antegrade Perfusion Model: An Ex Vivo Technique to Perfuse Isolated Mouse Heart

This video describes an antegrade perfusion technique of an isolated mouse heart during which a perfusate is injected through the left ventricle, and eventually, it perfuses the entire myocardium. This method can be used to isolate cardiomyocytes from murine models and generate decellularized hearts for further downstream applications.
