Subplate Cortex

The subplate cortex is a transient layer of neurons beneath the developing cortical plate that organizes early communication within the immature brain. Subplate neurons receive and process early inputs, including thalamocortical signals, and form temporary connections that guide the maturation of cortical circuits before many permanent pathways are established. As development proceeds, most subplate neurons are eliminated or incorporated into lasting networks, while their target circuits become more refined. Studying this developmental scaffold helps neuroscientists understand cortical formation, sensory circuit assembly, and how disruptions during early brain development may contribute to neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Source: Francis, M. B., et al. Detecting Cortex Fragments During Bacterial Spore Germination. J. Vis. Exp. (2016).This video demonstrates a colorimetric method to detect cortex degradation during bacterial spore germination by measuring the release of reducing sugars over time. Using N-acetylglucosamine standards and time-point samples, the assay quantifies sugar concentration through a purple chromogenic reaction, indicating the extent of cortex hydrolysis.

Association Areas of the Cortex

2025

Association areas are regions of the cerebral cortex that do not have a specific sensory or motor function. Instead, they integrate and interpret information from various sources to enable higher cognitive processes such as memory, learning, and decision-making. Some key association areas include the following: Prefrontal Association Area: This area is located in the frontal lobe and is involved in planning, decision-making, and moderating social behavior. It connects with primary motor areas,...

Isolation of Microglia from the Cortex of an Adult Mouse Brain

2025

The video demonstrates a technique for isolating microglia from the cortex of an adult mouse brain. First, the cortex undergoes segmentation and homogenization to remove neurons and other glial cells, preserving microglia. Following that, the cell suspension is exposed to anti-myelin magnetic microbeads and a magnetic field, effectively separating microglia and myeloid cells from myelin debris and cells containing myelin.
