Conscious Cytometry

Conscious cytometry is the quantitative analysis of cells in living, awake organisms, extending cytometry beyond measurements from isolated or fixed samples. In a typical workflow, minimally invasive sampling or in vivo sensing captures cells or cellular signals, while optical detection uses light scatter and fluorescence to assess features such as cell size, granularity, and molecular markers in near real time. This approach can reveal how immune, blood, or other cell populations change during physiological activity, disease, or treatment. For bioengineering, conscious cytometry supports longitudinal monitoring and the development of integrated sensors, microfluidic devices, and minimally invasive systems that connect cellular behavior with whole-organism function.

An EEG experimental protocol is designed to clarify the interplay between conscious and non-conscious representations of emotional faces in patients with Asperger's syndrome. The technique suggests that patients with Asperger's syndrome have deficits in non-conscious representation of emotional faces, but have comparable performance in conscious representation with healthy controls.

Understanding Consciousness

2024

Consciousness can be defined as the state of being aware of and able to think about one's existence, sensations, and surroundings. It encompasses two major components: awareness and arousal. Awareness pertains to the recognition of environmental stimuli and internal states. At the same time, arousal refers to the physiological readiness to engage with these stimuli, which varies significantly between states like sleep and wakefulness. Sleep, a crucial state, is characterized by reduced physical...

These guidelines can be used for the administration of the Simplified Evaluation of CONsciousness Disorders (SECONDs), a short behavioral tool developed to diagnose brain-injured patients in time-constrained settings. This scale examines command-following, communication, visual pursuit, fixation, pain localization, oriented movements and arousal.

Hyperinsulinemic-Euglycemic Clamp in the Conscious Rat

The hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp is the "gold standard" for the assessment of insulin action. Insulin is infused at a constant rate stimulating glucose uptake. The amount of exogenous glucose infused to counter this drop is indicative of insulin sensitivity. Here the procedure is performed on a conscious, unrestrained rat.
