Cell Shape

Cell shape is the physical form and geometry of a cell, an important feature that reflects how cells perform specialized functions and respond to their surroundings. Shape arises from coordinated interactions among the plasma membrane, cytoskeleton, cell adhesion systems, and external mechanical forces; actin filaments, microtubules, and intermediate filaments help organize extensions, boundaries, and internal structure. Changes in cell shape support movement, division, communication, and tissue organization, while abnormal shapes can indicate altered development, disease, or environmental stress. Studying cell shape therefore helps researchers connect cellular structure with function in areas such as developmental biology, cell signaling, cancer research, and tissue engineering.

2011

Early development of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, is characterized by a number of cell shape changes that are well suited for imaging approaches. This article will describe basic tools and methods required for live confocal imaging of Drosophila embryos, and will focus on a cell shape change called cellularization.

Shape Memory Polymers for Active Cell Culture

2011

A method for developing cell culture substrates with the ability to change topography during culture is described. The method makes use of smart materials known as shape memory polymers that have the ability to memorize a permanent shape. This concept is adaptable to a wide range of materials and applications.

Ring-Shaped Micropatterning Cell Chirality Assay: An In Vitro Technique to Determine Multicellular Chirality Based on Cell Alignment on Ring-Shaped Micropatterns

2025

In this video, we describe a cell chirality assay to determine the alignment bias of cells in a confined geometric boundary such as a ring micropattern. Chirality is an inherent property of most cell types and is determined by genetic and environmental factors. Knowing the chirality of a normal cell population can help to screen drug-treated cells.

Dipole Moment of a Molecule Polar covalent bonds connect two atoms with differing electronegativities, leaving one atom with a partial positive charge (δ+) and the other atom with a partial negative charge (δ–), as the electrons are pulled toward the more electronegative atom. This separation of charge gives rise to a bond dipole moment. The magnitude of a bond dipole moment is represented by the Greek letter mu (µ) and is given by the formula shown here, where Q is the magnitude of the...
