Wrist Extensors

Wrist extensors are a group of forearm muscles that straighten the wrist and help position the hand for gripping, lifting, and precise movement. They work primarily by contracting to produce extension at the radiocarpal and midcarpal joints, while coordinated activity with the wrist flexors stabilizes the hand and maintains effective finger-flexor length during grasping. The main extensors include extensor carpi radialis longus, extensor carpi radialis brevis, and extensor carpi ulnaris, with additional muscles contributing to finger and thumb extension. Understanding their anatomy and biomechanics supports the assessment of movement, muscle function, overuse injuries, and rehabilitation in biology, kinesiology, and clinical research.

Wrist and Hand Examination

2015

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The wrist is a complex joint made up of 8 carpal bones and their numerous articulations and ligaments. Overlying the wrist are the tendons and muscles of the hand and fingers. The hand is made up of 5 metacarpal bones, and the tendons that run to the hand overlie these bones. Finally, the fingers consist of 14 phalanges with their articulations held together by collateral ligaments and volar plates. Common mechanisms of...
