Tumor Cell Dissociation

Tumor cell dissociation is the process of separating a solid tumor into individual cells or small clusters for laboratory analysis and experimentation. It typically combines mechanical disruption with enzymatic digestion, using agents such as collagenase or trypsin to break down extracellular matrix proteins and cell-cell contacts while preserving cell viability. The resulting single-cell suspension supports flow cytometry, genetic and molecular profiling, primary cell culture, and analysis of tumor heterogeneity. In cancer research, careful dissociation helps researchers characterize malignant and stromal populations, investigate treatment responses, and establish patient-derived models, although the procedure must be optimized to minimize cell damage and changes in cellular behavior.
