Zinc Displacement Reaction

A zinc displacement reaction is a redox reaction in which zinc replaces a less reactive metal, typically from a compound dissolved in solution, making it a useful model for chemical reactivity. Zinc atoms lose electrons to form Zn2+ ions, while ions of a metal such as copper gain those electrons and deposit as solid copper; this process is favored because zinc is higher than copper in the activity series. In chemistry laboratories, the reaction demonstrates oxidation, reduction, electron transfer, and single-displacement principles, while related reactions help explain metal recovery, corrosion, and electrochemical cell behavior.

This protocol describes a method for deriving DNA strand displacement gates from plasmids and testing them using fluorescence kinetics measurements. Gates can be modularly composed into multi-component systems to approximate the behavior of formal chemical reaction networks (CRN), demonstrating a new use for CRNs as a molecular programming language.

Position and Displacement

2023

The position of an object defines its location relative to a convenient frame of reference at any particular time. A frame of reference is an arbitrary set of axes from which the position and motion of an object are described. Earth is often used as a frame of reference, and we often describe the position of an object as it relates to stationary objects on Earth. For example, a rocket launch could be described in terms of the position of the rocket with respect to Earth as a whole. On the other...
