Calcium Scoring

Calcium scoring is a noninvasive imaging method that estimates the amount of calcified plaque in the coronary arteries, helping assess an individual’s risk of cardiovascular disease. During a specialized computed tomography scan, calcium deposits appear as high-density regions, and their size and density are combined into an Agatston score that reflects the overall burden of coronary artery calcification. Clinicians use this result alongside age, symptoms, and other risk factors to refine prevention decisions, including the need for lifestyle changes or additional evaluation. The test supports clinical risk stratification but does not directly measure noncalcified plaque or diagnose every form of heart disease.

Calcium-Scoring CT ScanA calcium-scoring CT scan, also known as coronary artery calcium (CAC) scan, detects calcium deposits in the coronary arteries. This test assesses the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), which can lead to cardiovascular events such as angina, heart failure, and sudden cardiac arrest.A calcium-scoring CT scan is generally recommended for individuals at intermediate risk of CAD without symptoms. It includes:Men aged 40-75 and women aged 50-75: Especially those with a...

Introduction to z Scores

2023

A z score (or standardized value) is measured in units of the standard deviation. It tells you how many standard deviations the value x is above (to the right of) or below (to the left of) the mean, μ. Values of x that are larger than the mean have positive z scores, and values of x that are smaller than the mean have negative z scores. If x equals the mean, then x has a zero z score. It is important to note that the mean of the z scores is zero, and the standard deviation is one. z scores help...

Calcium is a ubiquitous messenger in the nervous system, essential for triggering neurotransmitter release and changes in synaptic strength. Here we demonstrate a technique for loading Ca2+-indicators into Drosophila nerve terminals. We also demonstrate fabrication of the required apparatus and emphasize points critical for the technique's success.

Calcium Imaging in Neurons

Calcium ions play an integral role in neuron function: They act as intracellular signals that can elicit responses such as altered gene expression and neurotransmitter release from synaptic vesicles. Within the cell, calcium concentration is highly dynamic due to the presence of pumps that selectively transport these ions in response to a variety of signals. Calcium imaging takes advantage of intracellular calcium flux to directly visualize calcium signaling in living neurons. This video begins...
